Officially Built Green Community Certified

What is Built Green Communities Certification?

Many people are familiar with Built Green certified homes, but the Communities program takes a broader view, looking at sustainability across an entire neighbourhood.

The certification considers seven key areas:

  • Site Location
  • Layout and Design
  • Energy Systems
  • Water Conservation
  • Materials and Waste Management
  • Health and Wellness
  • Business Practices and Innovation

Together, these areas provide a comprehensive framework for evaluating how a community is planned, developed and experienced by the people who live there.

Why Built Green?

Many of the practices recognized within the Built Green framework were already part of how we plan and develop our communities. Certification gives us an objective framework to better understand the collective impact of those efforts, identify opportunities for improvement and continue evolving our approach as our communities grow.

Built Green's approach also aligns closely with how Brookfield thinks about sustainability. It's not only about environmental performance — it's about creating healthy, resilient and livable places where people want to live.

For us, that connection between sustainability and livability is important. A more sustainable community should also support the everyday experience of the people who call it home.

A Collaborative Approach

Creating a more sustainable community is a collective effort, and the homes within the neighbourhood are an important part of the Built Green Communities framework.

Our participating builders Brookfield Residential, Daytona Homes, Excel Homes and Homes by Avi — participate in the Built Green program, voluntarily pursuing Built Green certification and building beyond minimum code requirements.

Their participation helps connect sustainability at the community level with the homes people live in every day — bringing together how a neighbourhood is planned with how homes are designed and built.

What Does This Mean For Residents?

Ultimately, the benefit is reflected in the everyday experience of the community.

It's having access to parks, trails and natural spaces; being able to walk or cycle through the neighbourhood; having schools, recreation and amenities nearby; and having access to homes designed to be more energy efficient, comfortable and resource conscious.

For Brookfield, pursuing Built Green Communities certification isn't simply about earning a certification. It's an opportunity to better understand what we're already doing, identify where we can do more and continue creating communities that are healthier, more resilient and designed to thrive for generations.
